Start with the listings that have reviews and a working phone number, then call one or two before you book. Ask how long they have been reading, what they specialise in, what a session costs and how long it runs. A reader who answers those questions plainly is usually a safer bet than one who avoids them.

Most readers in the United States charge between $40 and $150 for a session of 30 to 60 minutes. Phone and video readings are often billed per minute, roughly $1 to $10. Prices vary a lot by city and by how well known the reader is, so agree on the length and the price before you start.

Plenty of readers work both ways and say the format makes little difference to them. In person suits people who want to see the cards laid out or have a longer conversation. Phone and video are easier to fit into a day and let you reach a reader outside New York.

Warning signs are easy to spot once you know them: pressure to pay for removing a curse, requests for large sums in cash, promises to guarantee a specific outcome, or refusal to name a price up front. A reader who explains what they can and cannot do is worth more than one who promises everything.

Write down two or three questions and decide which part of your life you want to look at. Open questions such as "what should I pay attention to at work this year" give a reader more to work with than yes-or-no ones. If you book numerology, bring exact dates and full names.

Refund rules are set by each reader, not by us. Some offer a partial refund inside a few minutes of the start, most do not refund a finished session. Ask about it when you book, and pay by card if you want a record of the payment.
