The crystal ball is the most recognisable prop in this whole field and one of the least understood. It is not a screen and nothing appears in it on demand. Scrying, the practice behind it, is a way of using a plain reflective surface to quiet the analytical part of your attention so that images and associations surface. Readers have used water, ink, black mirrors and polished stone for the same purpose for centuries.
Where it comes from
Water scrying shows up in the ancient Mediterranean, mirror gazing in medieval Europe, and obsidian mirrors in Mesoamerica. The Victorian fairground version, complete with velvet and a glass sphere, is a costume added late in the story and it stuck because photographs of it did.
Serious readers today usually work with a smooth sphere of glass, quartz or obsidian, sized between 60 and 100 mm, on a dark stand and away from direct light. The point is a surface without detail, not an expensive one.
What a session looks like
You say what you want to look at. The reader settles, gazes into the sphere with a soft focus, and describes what comes: shapes, colours, small scenes, sometimes a phrase. Most of it needs interpreting rather than reporting, so a good reader will ask what a particular image lands on for you. Sessions run 30 to 60 minutes and cost roughly the same as any other reading, $60 to $150 in most US cities.
Some readers combine scrying with cards, since the cards give structure and the sphere gives loose imagery. If you want structure, book a tarot reader. If you want something looser, a scryer is the better hour.
Trying it yourself
- Pick a surface without pattern: a glass sphere, a bowl of water in a dark bowl, or a black mirror.
- Work in low light, with the light behind you rather than on the surface.
- Sit so the surface is about an arm's length away and slightly below eye level.
- Hold one question in mind, then let your focus soften. Blink normally, do not stare.
- Give it ten minutes and write down whatever came up, including the boring parts.
The usual mistake is staring hard and expecting a picture. What most people get at first is drifting colour, then afterimages, then, if anything, fragments. Writing them down matters more than the session itself, because patterns show up across several attempts rather than in one.
What it will not do
Scrying does not produce verified facts about other people, medical answers or dates you can plan around. Any reader who tells you the ball has shown a curse on your family, removable for a fee, is running an old and profitable script. Prices are agreed before the session and they do not change during it.
