I'm on a quest to visit every state and national park in Arizona, and was able to finally hit the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. First, it's huge. The loop to take in all of the scenic stops is 45 minutes if you don't actually stop. It was stormy when I visited and that was probably the highlight. The views were not what I expected. Very barren and reminded me of open-pit mining. I saw some petrified logs laying around. Not a lot. I saw more in the many gift shops in the area. Still, it's nice that the land is being protected. Was it worth a 600 mile round trip drive from Phoenix? Eh. Probably not, but I did get my souvenir magnets, a nice hat, some petrified wood from a gift shop, and a day of cool temperatures.

Great park that has a great deal of history. Can be done within a day. Excellent view of the painted dessert, petrified wood, and a window into how much the world has changed in its millions of years. Highly recommend making the trip.

If you’re wondering if it’s worth it; Yes!!!! It is. Petrified Forest National Park is one of my new favorite places! It was so magical and interesting. I walked the Giant Log trail at the Rainbow forest museum/gift shop (neat museum with friendly ranger and activities) Its a must! Same with Crystal forest trail further in the park. I highly recommend it, especially at sunset. It’s .8 miles and paved good and easy to walk on. I seen families with kids on the trail. Takes you to a beautiful boneyard valley of colorful petrified wood. I’m going back to do some of the longer hikes!
