I've never been to the South Rim, but the North Rim was awesome and not over crowded. Worth the extra drive. There is a lot of cool stuff to see on the extended drive as well.

We went on Nov 10th, the visitor center and services were closed but the light dusting of snow made the views even more incredible. Be a bit careful as the pathways are slippery with ice. The white, red, and yellow textures all around you are amazing. There will be very few people around, so your pictures will have no interlopers. Plenty of places to climb up on rocks for awesome pictures. Oh, they kindly have porta pottys which are maintained.

Visited the North Brim of the Grand Canyon during beginning of July. It was pretty nice on top of the brim with nice breeze from the wind. We did the Transept trail which is about three miles out and back from the visitor center to the campground and back to the visitor center. The hike involved a lot of walking through the grass land area with some spots where the Grand Canyon is visible. There were some nice cute little lizards on the trail.
