Three numbers do most of the work in a numerology reading, and you can calculate all of them yourself in about ten minutes. What follows uses the Pythagorean system, the one most common in the United States.

Life path number, from your date of birth

Reduce each part of the date to a single digit, then add them and reduce again. For 14 March 1988: month 3 stays 3; day 14 becomes 1 + 4 = 5; year 1988 becomes 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 26, then 2 + 6 = 8. Add the three: 3 + 5 + 8 = 16, then 1 + 6 = 7. The life path is 7.

The one exception is master numbers. If a step lands on 11, 22 or 33, most practitioners stop there rather than reducing to 2, 4 or 6. This is the single most argued point in numerology, so a reader who explains their rule is a reader who has thought about it.

Expression number, from your full birth name

Assign each letter a number: A J S = 1, B K T = 2, C L U = 3, D M V = 4, E N W = 5, F O X = 6, G P Y = 7, H Q Z = 8, I R = 9. Use the full name exactly as recorded at birth, middle names included. Add every letter, then reduce.

A quick example: ANN = 1 + 5 + 5 = 11, a master number, so it stays 11. Married names, nicknames and legal changes are read separately as an overlay rather than replacing the birth name.

Soul urge and personality

Soul urge uses only the vowels of the full birth name, personality only the consonants, each reduced the same way. Readers use them as the private and the public face of the expression number.

Personal year, for timing

Add your birth month, birth day and the current year, then reduce. For 14 March in 2026: 3 + 5 + (2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, then 1) = 9. A personal 9 year is read as an ending or a clearing-out, a 1 year as a start. This is the number most often used for planning, and it is the one worth recalculating each January.

What the numbers are used for

  • Life path: the broad shape of how you tend to approach things.
  • Expression: what you are working with, read from the name.
  • Soul urge: what you want when nobody is watching.
  • Personal year: the season you are in, used for timing decisions.

None of them predicts events. Used sensibly, they give you a vocabulary for a decision you are already turning over, which is why people book readings around moves, launches and name changes.

Checking your work

Two common mistakes: reducing the year before the digits are summed, and dropping a middle name. Both change the result. If your numbers disagree with an online calculator, check which system the calculator uses, since Chaldean assigns letters differently and will not match.
